The first topic is Mary E. J. Colter’s design contributions that extend beyond the buildings for which she is known. Colter’s ability to integrate buildings into their natural surroundings influenced park
architecture both in and outside of Grand Canyon National Park. She also played a part in planning and use decisions within the Park.

The second topic is the construction of Phantom Ranch and two (non-concurrent) suspension bridges in the Canyon in the 1920s and how the limited transportation options for materials delivery constrained their designs. Both presentations draw on archival research in the Grand Canyon Museum and other collections.

Biography
Linda Reeder is an architect, author, and professor emerita. Her research on Mary E. J. Colter and the history of design and construction at the Grand Canyon has been published in the Journal of the Southwest, Journal of Construction History, and The Ol’ Pioneer; and presented at the 2023 Grand Canyon History Symposium and published in its proceedings.
