Celebrate the 150th birthday of the historic Fred Harvey company, and the 100th of Rt. 66 in Phoenix, Grand Canyon, and Winslow!

Our first-ever special Frediversary weekend in Arizona, June 18-22, which you can join at any (or all) of three historic, delicious AZ Harvey locations for talks, meals and FredHead fun: the Heard Museum in Phoenix (6/18), Grand Canyon South Rim (6/19-20) and La Posada Hotel in Winslow (6/21-22)!

6/18 Heard Museum in Phoenix:
4:00-6: 30 pm: Frediversary panel of Harvey hotel saviors Jenny Kimball and Allan Affeldt, Harvey family members and Heard Harvey experts, moderated by Harvey biographer Stephen Fried; followed by lecture from John P. Lukavic, Andrew W. Mellon Curator of Native Arts at the Denver Art Museum, on Southern Plains Beadwork featured in the Heard’s landmark Fred Harvey Fine Art Foundation collection, followed by a cocktail reception.

6/19 Grand Canyon South Rim (stay over at many hotels in and around the park, or drive in daily) opening reception in El Tovar mezzanine 2-5 pm (those registered for GC events need to get their wristbands for weekend).

5 pm: Stakeholder meeting about the future of Fred Harvey/Harvey Girls/Mary Colter/ATSF/SW history research.
Dinner on your own (make reservations at El Tovar or Arizona Steakhouse, walk-in at Harvey House diner) followed by socializing and star gazing

6/20 Grand Canyon South Rim:
Breakfast and lunch on your own; reserved rides available in the restored 1929 Indian Detours HarveyCar (register here for time slot, available every 15 minutes from 8:30 am-1 pm)

10:30-11:30 AM free talk on restoration of Mary Colter Lookout Studio including a private tour (meet in Thunderbird Room at 10:30)

 

1:00-3:30 PM Fred Harvey History talks, Thunderbird Room (free with registration): author Stephen Fried on Past and Future of Harvey History; Mysteries of Grand Canyon Architecture with architectural historian Matt Kluge; and Teddy R & GC with historian Justin Riner and Stephen Fried

5:00 pm special Frediversary Dinner at El Tovar, reservations required (make them on this eventbrite

7 pm: Grand Canyon Frediversary Panel in Thunderbird Room with Harvey and GC experts Allan Affeldt, Jenny Kimball, Stephen Fried, Andy Stiles, Harvey family members Daggett Harvey, Jr. Jean Vanderbilt, Charles Harvey, and others. Free.

6/21 Grand Canyon South Rim to Winslow, AZ:

6/21 La Posada, Winslow:
Optional tours all afternoon of La Posada; its historic ATSF 502 Super Chief Pleasure Dome train car; the new Affeldt-Mion Museum (featuring The Big Rug display, Harveyana and Dan Lutzick art show); and other Winslow historic buildings and galleries–El Gran Garage, Motor Palace, Suttman Studio and Snowdrift (and, of course, the “corner”); dinner on your own at Turquoise Room, reservations required;
