Grand Canyon Historical Society

GCHS preserves the personal stories of those who witnessed, or know about any aspect of, Grand Canyon’s history.

Patricia "Patch" McCairen

What Is Oral History? Oral history collects historical information through recorded interviews between a narrator with firsthand knowledge of historically significant events and a well-informed interviewer, with the goal of preserving substantive additions to the historical record. Because an oral history is primary material, it isn’t intended to present the final, verified, or complete narrative of events. It reflects personal opinion offered by the interviewee in response to questioning. And, it can be partisan, deeply involved, and irreplaceable.

The Grand Canyon Historical Society Oral History Program
In November 2013, the GCHS Board approved funding for an Oral History Project and interviews began in the spring of 2014. The project involves the taping of oral interviews with any number of people who lived or worked in the Grand Canyon and the nearby region.

The initial thrust of the project is to document first those candidates whose recollections may be lost in the near term. However, it is also important to interview those who may be in mid-career or even early career at Grand Canyon. The project as envisioned need not be solely the recording of stories by those who may be near the end-of-life. We are interviewing as many people as possible that have an intimate connection to the Grand Canyon.

Grand Canyon Oral History Recordings and Transcriptions
As transcripts are finished, they are provided as well. Both are a part of the public domain and are stored here, at the Museum Collection, Grand Canyon National Park, and at Cline Library Special Collections. Many of the interviews and their transcripts are available on this web site as well. It is our hope these interviews will become a lasting record for the personal histories of the Grand Canyon, to be used in future research endeavors.

The Transcriptions are PDF documents. The audio files are MP3’s and can be very large files, some over 1Gb in size.

If you would like to use this material in any way, we simply ask you cite: Grand Canyon Historical Society Oral History Program, Grand Canyon National Park Museum Collection, and Cline Library Special Collections.

If you are unable to download an MP3 sound file or would like a copy of any of the MP3 sound files, please contact oralhistories@grandcanyonhistory.org

Historian Tom Martin and his wife Hazel Clark have launched their own Oral History website accessed at:

www.grandcanyonazus.com/oral-histories.html

Tom Martin has conducted oral histories for nearly a decade and has interviewed more than 100 people associated with the Grand Canyon region. If you would like to hear directly from those who make Grand Canyon history, check out their page. We wish their endeavor every success moving forward.

Suggestions/Volunteers

If you know of someone who might be a good candidate for an oral history interview, please let us know with a suggestion by email at this address: oralhistories@grandcanyonhistory.org.
We appreciate all recommendations.

Please note that we are working on the audio files for many of the interviews and the full files may not be available for a week or so.
