We have established a collection of historical materials at the Northern Arizona University's Cline Library in Flagstaff, Arizona, where letters, papers and photographs are cataloged and stored archivally for research.
We also are making available online a collection from the Greenlaw photo album.
|
Donations to the GCHS archives at NAU are welcome, and may be made under the following guidelines:
- The donor should indicate that the collection is to be included in the GCHS archives. The materials should relate to the Grand Canyon is some way.
- The donor will be asked to sign a NAU Cline Library Deed of Gift which transfers physical ownership as well as copyright to NAU. The GCHS is credited in collection information. The donor will also be asked to indicate if he/she would like material to be returned or discarded, if for some reason it falls outside the collecting scope of GCHS or NAU. We do not, for instance, acquire copies of Arizona Highways.
- As archivists, we prefer gifts of original materials (photographs, letters, etc.) rather than copies.
- Identification of material is very helpful. A soft number two pencil and hard surface should be used when recording names on images. There are also special pencils available for glossy images. Most photo stores could help.
- NAU standards for digital master files are rigorous. Bee Valvo, the Curator of Visual Materials, is more than happy to work with potential donors who have digital objects to offer.
- Given the enormity of the archival holdings at NAU and requests from students and faculty for digitization projects related to NAU courses, we cannot guarantee when items might be added to the Digital Archives.
For more information on Donations, see NAU Cline Library Donations web page.
Researching ? Use the finding guide at Arizona Archives Online. For instance, type Fred Harvey into the search box; this accesses finding guides for collections of the three Arizona universities. Still can't find it, send an email to Special.Collections@NAU.edu, or send an email to Pioneers@GrandCanyonHistory.org and we'll ask some of our members.
The following samples from the Grand Canyon Historical Society's photo archive collection represent only a small portion of that collection. The complete collection is housed with the
Special Collections and Archives department of the Cline Library at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona.
Eddie Alvin Newman, born in 1900, was a Grand Canyon resident and employee of the Santa Fe Railway during the 1920s and 1930s. The photographs in this collection were from his personal album, and many are attributed to him as the photographer. Mr. Newman and his wife, Edna Greening, later moved to Ash Fork, Arizona where he was employed as a telegraph operator by the Santa Fe Railway. Mr. Newman died on his birthday, August 20, in 1952 in Ash Fork. Both he and his wife are buried in the Williams, Arizona cemetery.
