The Grand Canyon Pioneers Society Pioneer Award for 1997 was presented to Harvey Butchart for:
- the significant contribution he made to our understanding and appreciation of the Grand Canyon through his exploration, historical research, photographs, and written and verbal accounts of that most incomparable of all natural wonders;
- making the Canyon accessible to a multitude of hikers and explorers for whom he had diligently served as a mentor in their quest to follow his pioneering footsteps;
- his photographic memory recorded in letters to backpackers requesting information;
- his mathematical detail of Canyon descriptions that have been made available for future generations, and;
- keeping alive the grand tradition of Powell and others in seeking out and traversing yet another part of the Great Unknown.
