Susie, granddaughter of canyon pioneer John G. Verkamp, was born at Grand Canyon hospital in 1947. She was raised in an apartment above Verkamp’s curio store and attended Grand Canyon public schools from 1st to 12th grades. She graduated with honors from the University of Arizona and pursued graduate studies in Folklore and Mythology at UCLA. In 1986, she earned a BS degree in Environmental Science from Evergreen State College. She currently serves as president of Verkamp’s Inc., the oldest continuously operated, family owned concession in the national park system. She has become increasingly aware of the uniqueness of growing up at the Canyon in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s and looks forward to sharing insights and anecdotes from that period of village life.
