Steve was born in California in 1943 while his father John George Verkamp II was working in the war effort. He spent his childhood and all his school days at the rim of the Grand Canyon living in the
family quarters above the Verkamp's Store. Upon graduation from Grand Canyon High School in 1961, Steve attended undergraduate and law school at the University of Arizona. Upon completion of law school he entered the U.S Army and served the nation in the Republic of Vietnam conflict. Upon return from military service Steve practiced law as a public defender, county attorney, and in private practice with his
older brother John. Steve was appointed as the first federal full time judge in northern Arizona in 1991. He retired from the bench in 2005 and now enjoys retirement living in Flagstaff with his wife Christina. Steve also is the author of The Story of The U.S. Magistrate Court in Northern Arizona.
